SUMMARY

The City of Berkeley is looking for an individual with a high level of professional ethics, integrity, and proven leadership skills to serve as its Chief of Police. Under general supervision of the City Manager, the Police Chief will manage the Department’s 48 employees, of whom 37 are sworn officers (including police chief).

The City of Berkeley is accepting applications for the position of Police Chief. We are a community on the move with nearly 10,000 residents. The Berkeley Police Department provides complete law enforcement services to the City of Berkeley and extend mutual aid to neighboring municipalities. The ideal candidate should have a passion for police work, be progressive, and have a strong professional background in law enforcement. Our next Chief of Police shall be team oriented, possess exceptional leadership, a vision to reduce crime and have a commitment to community.  Strong communication skills are essential for interactions with department employees, city leaders, and the community.

The City of Berkeley is approximately five square miles and is located just 5 minutes from the St Louis International Airport. We are home to Boeing, SKF Manufacturing, and, Express Scripts. We are 15 minutes from beautiful downtown St. Louis. The City of Berkeley connects to three major highways, 70, 170, and 270. Our city hall and fire station is five-years old and our new state of the art Police Station will officially open in August 2017.  Berkeley Police Department (BPD) is comprised of 48 employees, of whom 37 are sworn officers (including the police chief). The hiring process for the Berkeley PD seeks officers and staff that meet the City’s core values and the highest level of integrity.

The City of Berkeley strives to demonstrate commitment to excellence and service.  We are working to achieve national accreditation through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). We expect the accreditation process to be completed in 2018, therefore our new Police Chief shall make training its major focus for the PD staff. 

Minimum requirements include a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Criminal Justice, Public Policy Administration, or Business Administration.  Completion of advanced management training such as the FBI National Academy is highly desirable.  More than ten years of experience in municipal law enforcement is required, with a minimum of seven years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience serving as a police commander including Police Chief, Deputy Chief, Assistant Chief, Major or Lieutenant.
