NATURE OF WORK

This position require skills in the Firefighting and Pre-hospital treatment of patients.  Firefighting entails the performance of hazardous tasks under emergency conditions which may require strenuous exertion under direct supervision from specific orders and directions, also requires initiative and understanding of modern fire fighting methods and techniques.

Rendering of pre-hospital emergency medical care and advanced life support measures to victims of accidents, fires or other emergency calls for service.  This work is performed under stressful conditions in emergency situations where human life is in danger.  Advanced life support work is performed through direct communication with (Medical Control) a physician at a nearby hospital and conforming to the standards set by the legislature of the State of Missouri in the 190.100-190.195 revised statutes as concerning emergency medical services.  The work performed under the direction of the emergency department physician.  In majority of cases, the paramedic is the most qualified medical authority on the scene. He/she must be able to understand the legal responsibilities and direct the operations in the best interest of the patient. 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

 Responds to fire alarms with a company.

  • Drives equipment and operates pumps, rescue equipment; advance life support equipment and other apparatuses.
  • Lays and connects hoses.
  • Hold nozzles and directs fog or water streams.
  • Raises and climbs ladders, ventilates burning building, removes persons from danger and administers first aid.
  • Renders Basic or Advanced life support to injured persons.
  • Uses advanced life support techniques and equipment.
  • Assists in fire inspections for compliance with fire prevention ordinances.
  • Performs salvage operations including sweeping water and removing debris.
  • Participates in fire drills and attends regular classes in firefighting methods and techniques, first-aid, advanced life support, fire prevention, equipment maintenance and other related subjects.
  • Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of departmental quarters and equipment and operate rescue units and the specific tools and special equipment maintained in this unit.
  • Communicates with the hospital via telemetry and carriers out the specific orders in the interest of the patient.
  • Instructs CPR Classes and installs Child Safety Seats.

 QUALIFICATIONS

Must have a High School Diploma or Equivalent.  Must have a valid driver’s license with a good driving record. Must have a valid National Registry Paramedic’s (EMT-P) license or State of Missouri Paramedic license to work as FF/EMTP. Must have current valid ACLS and CPR certification through the American Heart Association. Must have Firefighter I & II Certification with the state of Missouri and be a graduate of The St. Louis County Fire Standards Commission (St. Louis County Fire Academy).

Must be CPAT certified by the time of hire. Anyone currently attending St. Louis County Fire Academy, Paramedic School or is enrolling in Paramedic school is eligible to apply.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

This position is paid for in part under the S.A.F.E.R. grant program. These employees are offered medical, dental, vision and life insurance with the same proportional (City/employee) payment plan as regular employees.  This position will not exceed 3 years and adheres to the Employee Rules & Regulations Handbook of the City and Operational Guidelines of the Berkeley Fire Department.  Although future funding for these positions are not guaranteed, future grants will be applied for and the City may be able to fund some of these positions in future budgets.
