As we prepare for summer, there are several safety tips that we all need to keep in mind.

Please never leave your home unattended.  While it’s nice to have fresh air, keep in mind that an open door or window could be an invitation for a burglar.  If you want to have doors and windows open, please make certain they are properly secured by storm doors and screens.

Although this is the year for the Census, if you are not expecting visitors, please be very heedful when someone knocks at your door. The Census Bureau uses a workforce of trained federal employees to conduct a variety of households and business surveys.  All Census takers have a valid Census ID badge.  No social security numbers, passwords, bank account or credit card details are required to complete you questionnaire.  If you believe you have been contacted as part of a bogus or fraudulent activity, do not hesitate to contact the Berkeley Police Department or the U.S. Census Bureau at (800) 728-4747.

Do not forget to check on your neighbors, especially the elderly and disabled.  Give them a call or visit to ensure they have an adequate cooling system in place; create small talk to make sure that no suspicious persons are attempting to take advantage of them. Strong neighborhoods are built on neighbors communicating with one another.  Strongly consider participating in the City of Berkeley’s Neighborhood Watch Program as an additional resource of communication.

As a final reminder, always call 9-1-1 if there appears to be anything out of the ordinary with your home or you see suspicious activity in your neighborhood.  Be vigilant against crime in your home, streets, neighborhoods and City.  Remember, the Berkeley Police Department is committed to our community. We are here to lend a hand and we are always on duty to serve our citizens.  It's always better to be safe than sorry. OUR PRUPOSE IS YOU!!!
